Don’t let the heat drag you down

I always say I have the best ideas in the shower.  The trick is holding on to them long enough to put pen to paper or remember them beyond the threshold of the shower.

But if I could bottle the thoughts and feelings that I had earlier today, I am assured to have a great 2015.
I, like pretty much every other person on the planet, have had my share of ups and downs in my life.  But it is how you overcome, reorganize and move on that speaks volumes about your strength and character.
Oh, to bottle the New Year feeling that everything is possible…this will be the year I…get into shape, eat healthy, find time for a social life, get my life in order…you can fill-in the blank however you wish, but the optimistic idea of change has a hold on you & me both.
I guess you can call them resolutions, but the negative stigma attached to resolutions that it is all about breaking them is probably not the best way to jump feet first into your new and improved life.
The golden ticket to success might be to be realistic and sensible.  I know that is not the sexy idealism that anything and everything is possible, but it certainly should make it more relatable and attainable in the real world.

I think lists in conjunction with a calendar are the keys to unlocking all the world has to offer – one bullet item at a time.  Sure, I would rather type about making lists than really sitting down with a calendar and putting my ideas into action.  (I yawn and lovingly look at my nearby pillow to take a big nap.)
list
But that is the old me…the new me is writing on the calendar to make my list…tomorrow.  🙂
But seriously, my plan is to embrace the small victories and by adding one or two items to my day, I hope to improve my everyday life.  It may not be about the BIG picture, but rather the small steps to you take to get there and the bumps in the road that form who you are and will become.

It is never to late to change, but you do have to be the catalyst in getting the ball rolling.  Stay tuned to see if life falls back into old habits or if small changes can truly make a difference.
Happy New Year!  Bring it on 2015!

Oh, my aching head

As I sit writing this, I’m contemplating taking yet another pill to ward off a wicked headache.  This has sadly become a pretty common occurrence, but without knowing the reasoning behind it (however hard I have tried – doctors, tests, etc.), I pop a pill and hope it will take the pain away with it.  Everything is connected.  What could it be? Sinuses? Eyes? Something else? A combination of things?  What it is…is annoying and disruptive.

Heachache - Mae West

I swear since I turned 30, it has all been downhill.  A little injury turns into months of recovery. One doctor visits leads to many more.  I have aches and pains that don’t seem to go away.  I crack and pop with every movement.

In my mind, I’m all alone in this, but in reality, we are all screwed.  I was just having coffee with old friends I met when I was in high school and while you might not be able to see how we have changed as much on the outside, we all had our ailments to complain about on the inside.  There is some comfort in knowing I’m not alone, but not enough to make me okay with getting older and dealing with life’s challenges as soon as we maybe start to feel like we are figuring it all out.  But I suppose the upside is that my memory is going too, so maybe I won’t remember how horrible it is to get older.

I am hopeful that there will be an upswing, but realistic that it may be a downward fall from here.  All we can do is make the best of the situation and enjoy the ride, I suppose.

Common Courtesies: What I’ve Learned From “Breaking Bad”

Life’s a stage, and actors aren’t the only performers.  Each of us has a part to play, whether as a professional, a family member, or a friend.  Regardless of the role, our performance is always enhanced by good manners. (from Modern Manners: Tools to Take You to the Top by Dorthea Johnson and Liv Tyler)

I will be the first one to admit that I am not Miss Manners, but I certainly believe in being kind to others (in most cases), in respecting my superiors and elders (in most cases) and that you can gain knowledge in just about any scenario presented to you (in most cases).

Although late to the party, I have been binge watching “Breaking Bad” for the past few weeks.  I have lost hours of productive time, but as I’m not much of a sun gal, I’m not missing precious hours in the summer sun, so there is something to gain from my loss.

Far from empty formalities, manners translate to common courtesy, simply showing small kindnesses to other human beings. (from Modern Manners: Tools to Take You to the Top by Dorthea Johnson and Liv Tyler)

In every situation Walter White is placed, he is respected by those who interact with him…even when he is there to kill them.  He respects others, even if their choice is to partake of his blue crystal.  When deciding to allow a person to live or die, he will get to know them, take all angles into consideration before completing the deed – all in the name of his family and friends.

He commands respect, Jesse still calls him “Mr. White” for goodness sake and his family supports him in all that he does…bad…but oh so good.

His role as a friend to Jesse Pinkman has brought more harm than good to him, but he continues to be loyal and courteous.  He has saved his life more times than I can count.  He tries to control his rage when Jesse does the most idiotic thing to put them in harm’s way time and time again.  In the end his love of his cooking partner gives him an “A” on the friend scale.

breaking-bad

His role as a family member can sometimes be questionable, but all his service is in the name of his family – immediate and extended…even though it puts his life on the line.  It is amazing the situations you will put yourself into when you think the end is near.  Providing for his family is priority number one whether he is there or long gone.  Don’t tell me the patience on this man hasn’t been tested (I’ve even wanted to kill his wife a time or ten), but he carries on in service to his DEA brother-in-law, his kleptomaniac sister-in-law, his cheating wife, his winey teenage son and his sweet baby girl.

My name is Walter Hartwell White. I live at 308 Negra Arroyo Lane, Albuquerque, New Mexico. 87104. To all law enforcement entities, this is not an admission of guilt. I am speaking to my family now. Skyler, you are the love of my life, I hope you know that. Walter junior, you’re my big man. There are… there are going to be some things, things that you’ll come to learn about me in the next few days. I just want you to know that, no matter how it may look, I only had you in my heart. Goodbye.”  – Walter White

His role as a professional sees him thriving in an exciting business world.  His outstanding work ethic would make any person want to do business with him.  He is calculated, he is thoughtful, he is careful, he is punctual, he is an outstanding team member.

Chemistry is, well technically, chemistry is the study of matter. But I prefer to see it as the study of change.” – Walter White

Though life has thrown some curve balls at Walter White he continues on with grace and style (at least through Season 3 – don’t spoil any final details for me) he plays his part in the stage of life with dignity and good manners.  We can all learn a little something from Walter White. {ding}

Clean Spaces, Happy Faces

It is no fun to spend your free time cleaning or organizing. But after seven years of running your own business, things accumulate and attention must be paid. I know I will be happy when it is all said and done. In the meantime, it is hours lost and tons of collected garbage getting in my way to a true day off.
k12050096I’ve also been scouring the internet and local stores to decorate my new office (not pictured below as it is still a work in progress) to give it that nice balance of personality, making it a comforting place to call home during the long, hot summer days and a functional work space to call my own.

Typically, when my living and working spaces are cluttering, so is my mind and my life.

take-one-thing-af1

I know that it took seven years to get me into my current mess and it won’t go away overnight, but it doesn’t stop me from wanting to snap my fingers like Mary Poppins, Jane and Michael to tidy up my space…and mind.

I’ve been told that letting off steam or meditating is the key to envisioning a new life…in my experience it is time, energy, effort and patience to get you to your happy place.  But I’m open to your ideas if you want to share…

Why are we in such a hurry?

“I’m late!  I’m late!  I’m late for a very important date!”  You will be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t know that famous line from Alice in Wonderland.  But can you remember what the white rabbit was late for?  I know I can’t.

Alice-White-Rabbit_l

I’ve always been an observer.  Hell, I even took an observational behavior class in college and found it fascinating.  I’ve been trying to not rush so much in my every day life, not to take things for granted and to be kinder to others.  If only, the feelings were reciprocated.

instant-gratification-i-want-it-now

In my former life, I worked mostly from home and didn’t have a lot of interaction with large amounts of strangers.  The more I’m out, the more I’m horrified by our fast food, instant gratification society.  What has happened in the last ten years?  Is it social media where we can up-to-the-minute news and no longer have to wait? Or does it distract us from paying attention to other deadlines and alarms in our lives, so that we are in a rush to get where we are going or to complete a project?

hurry

I’m not sure what the answer is or what the factors that led us here, but I sure hope we can make a change…and quick…or we might miss the important things in life that happen when we wait.

It is a well known fact of life that when you are in a hurry, mistakes are made, people hurt or annoyed and no wins in the end.  The next time you find yourself in a hurry, whether it be driving, talking, working or anything in life, think about who your rushed life benefits and affects.

In business, I believe the saying is

Your lack of planning is not my emergency.

Truer words have not been spoken.  Think ahead, plan and execute within a reasonable amount of time in your everyday life and you won’t miss those important things in life or have to read about everyone else’s moments on Facebook.

The Last Frontier

I recently visited Alaska and what I found is that it was a feast for the eyes and the soul.  With longer daylight hours, I fought off sleep for fear of missing the spectacular vistas. However, it was such a relaxing atmosphere it was incredibly hard to prevent the falling of my eyelids.

I’m not sure if it was the cooler temperatures, the amazing mountain views, the activities or all the yummy food I was ingesting, but I slept like a baby.  The surroundings were so stunning that I could have sworn it was fake.  That might be the Disney-ite in me, but me (and my camera) could not get enough of the snow-capped mountains.

It was a trip a long time in the making for me and my family, but with the busy life I was leading, I never had the proper time to plan or get overly excited about it until it was upon me.  This is the EXACT reason I have made the changes in my life…to stop and enjoy the moment in time, to live life rather than watching it pass me by.

IMG_1745

I could not have asked for more!  It was a time to unwind from the stresses of daily life and reconnect with my family.  I actually had the time to read a book and delight in an afternoon nap.  It was a time of rejuvenation and indulgence.

Alaska did not disappoint in its incredible scenery, crisp air, sunshine and new experiences.  It has left me wanting more, so I know I’m on the right track in my path of life.  Like the wingspan of the mighty eagle, I welcome with open arms what life brings my way.

And if that happens to be another trip to Alaska (with my family) I’ll take it again any day…as long as there is running water.  🙂
